Whisper - Eugenia Post Meridiem

By Sophia Stanford

Eugenia Post Meridiem’s latest single Whisper comes from their sophomore album Like I Need a Tension, offering a soothing and dreamy escape to the sunny Mediterranean. Blending a medley of European influences (the Italian band underwent an intense creative spell together in Lisbon, then proceeded to record their debut album in Berlin), Eugenia Post Meridiem have been honing in on their niche sound of indie folk with twinges of ‘60s psychedelic tendencies…

Whisper - Eugenia Post Meridiem

Whisper is deftly observant at qualities of isolation whilst being with another. For under the cover of a seemingly dreamy and soothing track, the lyrics hint at the confusion of being trapped in a situationship: ‘My prison where I serve my sentence / I cling to you’. But this gloriously ambiguous set up works well in its flexibility for self-application; feeling alienated from your surroundings, desire from another, desire for comfort, desire to return to yourself as ‘My body, organic universe / Everyday is closer’. The song works well as an anthem for your main character moment - it demands self introspection and works well as a soundtrack to romanticisation.

At points the song can feel a little aimless, lacking a distinctive moment of realisation. It sometimes feels similar to Lorde’s Solar Power: abstract lyrics over glimpses of acoustic guitar and quasi-ocean-sounding drums. That being said, the song is equally curious and experimental: lead singer Eugenia’s vocals carry you through it, so that you never lose your path from the collective thrumming of Matteo on the steady bass, Giovanni’s guitar and keys, or Matteo’s reassuring drums. The band also explained that they used ‘harmonised choirs and specific sound processing, and timbre choices’ which compliments the guitar solo as the song tapers out.

Feeling slightly akin to a young Wolf Alice in sound, aesthetic, members, and humour, the band have set themselves up for making their way into the European music scene. Currently undergoing a tour in Italy this year after festival appearances earlier this summer, Eugenia Post Meridian are set to be your new go-to band for summer nostalgia.
